Using Dura-lar to help with compostion

Exciting! Just starting off with my new website and blog. It has been a bit of a labour getting it all ready in time for the Love of Art Exhibition in Brisbane from 18-21 April, and trying to finish my art for the Exhibition. Hopefully, people will find the blogs interesting and useful. I can't wait to share some of my art experiences.

One tool that I have used recently is Dura-lar transparent sheets to help with tweaking composition. Sometimes a painting just isn't quite finished and you can tell something is missing.

I find it really helpful to overlay my work with Dura-Lar or similar products and be able to experiment with adding elements in different parts of the painting to see what completes the composition. Recently, I was working on this gum blossom painting on tissue with watercolour ground. The main part of the painting was fine, but I couldn't figure out how to finish off the edges.

I trialled a few positions for twigs and branches on the Dura-lar overlay, and eventually found a layout that worked for me. I was then able to confidently place the additions, without worrying that they were in the wrong place.

Here is the finished piece, mounted on a 10 x 10 inch cradle board, and coated with Dorland's wax to give it a protective layer.
